PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Members of NFSPS ~ It is a tremendous honor to be the President of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc., for the two year term of 2008-2010, and I am fully aware of the responsibility entrusted to me to insure that the founder’s vision for this wonderful organization is continued. My presidential medallion reminds me to stay true to that vision.
I am very pleased to be the leading member on a really great team, comprised of the elected Executive Board and my Appointive Board, as well as those who are Advisors. (The NFSPS team roster is located on page 2 of Strophes.)
Humbly, I hold the gavel engraved with the names of the past presidents of NFSPS, realizing that each gave unselfishly of their time while in office, each brought their own unique style to the leadership position. A distinctive policy of my administration will be that the team members whom you come in contact with will "go the extra mile" for you in every way possible. Expect excellent service, as you will receive it.
As your President, I would like to hear from you. In fact, I would like to travel to where you are to speak to you about NFSPS at any meeting or event you would invite me to. I am proud of NFSPS and positive regarding the future! ~ Sincerely,
Nancy Baass......28th President of NFSPS
P.S. to Ralph Hammond, 21st President of NFSPS: Thank you, for believing in me.
About the President, Poetically Speaking
Nancy Baass of Victoria, Texas (in the southern, coastal bend region of the state), is the 28th President of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, Inc., elected for the two year term of 2008-2010 at the49th NFSPS Annual Convention in Layton, Utah, June 19-22, 2008. She is the 6th member of the Poetry Society of Texas to serve as NFSPS President.
Prior to her election, she served 12 years on the NFSPS Executive Board. During her four years, 1996-2000, as Historian (an elected position at that time), she began the “Histories of Member Societies” project. For three of those years, she served in the NFSPS Appointive Board position of Judges Chairman for the NFSPS Annual Contests of 1998, 1999 and 2000. During her eight years as 4th through 1st Vice President, 2000-2008, she served in the NFSPS Appointive Board position of Contest Sponsors/Brochure Chairman. She became an NFSPS member when she joined the Poetry Society of Texas in 1991. She has attended NFSPS Conventions since 1992, often serving at them as a Reader of winning poems.
Serving her third year, 2005-2008, as Corresponding Secretary on the PST Executive Board, PST Meetings being held in Dallas, Texas, eight times a year, she will be leaving that position on September 1, having declined nomination for the next one year term. Continuing service to PST in appointed positions, she is currently in her second year as PST Annual Contests Chairman and her tenth year as equal Co-Chairman, with her Mother, Mildred Vorpahl Baass (Poet Laureate of Texas, 1993-1994 & 1994-1995),of the PST Annual Awards Banquet in Dallas, Texas, their years of service being 1994-1998 and2004-present; when not in charge, they have served as Greeters at the event. Throughout the years, she has volunteered her time at many PST Student Awards Festivals in Dallas, Texas.
She served as equal Co-Host/Co-Chairman, with her Mother, of the 1995 and 2007 PST Summer Conferences held in Victoria, Texas, and has attended many held around the state. Involved in the planning stages and serving in many capacities throughout the 1996 NFSPS Annual Convention hosted by PST in Dallas, Texas, she received an NFSPS Special Award related to her efforts. She served for two years, as equal Co-Editor, with her Mother, of PST's A Book of the Year, 1997 and 1998, their work receiving an NFSPS Special Award. She was named a PST Councilor in 1995, and she was honored to receive the prestigious Hilton Ross Greer Outstanding Service Award in 1996, this annual award voted on by the entire PST membership. She continues to serve as a poetry contest Judge for PST and its Chapters, NFSPS and its Member Societies, as well as other organizations. She is a Sponsor of contests for PST and NFSPS. In 1996 and 1997, she served as Editor of A Galaxy of Verse and President of a Galaxy of Verse Literary Foundation to which many NFSPS members belong.
A 1972 graduate of North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas), she holds a BFA degree in Art and feels that poetry is truly another form of artistic expression. Writing poetry since childhood, with award winning poetry to her credit in the past, she is a "private poet" at this point in her life.
Constellation Utah NFSPS Convention 2008
The stars shone brightly this June in Utah at our annual Convention and those stars were you! What a great time we had renewing old friendships and making new. Thursday morning a group toured Salt Lake City’s historic and interesting sights. On Thursday evening, a theatre group entertained us with “Moods and Mania.” Friday morning, Alex Caldiero fascinated us with his performance poetry. He taught us how important sound is. The next day the Ogden Standard Examiner devoted the front page of their Davis County section to a photo and report of his presentation and our NFSPS Convention.
Workshops and contest awards took the stage Friday and Saturday. Katherine Coles, Utah’s Poet Laureate, gave a useful workshop with three methods of generating ideas for poetry. Utah’s first Poet Laureate, David Lee, gave an interesting workshop and was the keynote speaker on Sunday evening, recalling his road to poetic success.
Brad Roghaar, Sue Ranglack, Beverly Monestier, Kimberly Johnson, Deborah Bogen, Matt Kennington and Natasha Saje also had presentations at the Convention. Sunday morning, a tour went to Salt Lake City to attend a broadcast of The Spoken Word and music by the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Sunday evening, poets and partners danced to live music by a talented trio before dinner. After the meal, President Doris Stengel introduced and installed new officers of NFSPS: Nancy Baass of Texas as President and her new board. There were door prizes, poetry awards and many photo opportunities.
Many thanks to Clarence Socwell and his committee for a great convention, to Marney Zambrano who handled registration and open readings, to Eric and Grace Read who managed the bookroom, to Theda Bassett who did a great job as tour guide on Sunday and her great job with the contest and to all who attended -- you made the Convention shine!
~Vera Ogden Bakker, USPS President

About Strophies
Strophies is available without cost to all paid-up members
of state societies when mailed in bulk to the president or
other designated person. Individual subscriptions are $5 a
year to cover handling costs. Special orders are mailed separately
from the regular mailing. Single copies to individuals
are $1, include a #10 SASE, specify issue.
Each state president should appoint a reporter responsible
for sending state news for each issue of Strophies. Please
keep items to special highlights in order to leave room for
other states ~ State Presidents! Please be sure to send to
Strophies Editor the name and address of your state distributor
and number of copies you require for your next issue.
This is very important! Thank you…
Attention Strophies Reporters
Please notice deadlines. Email flies faster than snail mail and
is easy for you to send me your reports that way. The 25th
of the month is even a tight date because the information
must be compiled, corrections made, taken to the printers
and proofed, all before being packaged and sent out to you.
It is a big job and I appreciate you all helping to make it run
smoothly. Thanks for your understanding.

Special Awards to States’ Guiding Lights
This year’s Special Awards went to a select group of people, 65 or older, who were nominated by their respective states for long service to the group. The array of their accomplishments was staggering. They have been officers, contest sponsors, chairmen, judges, the editors of newsletters, magazines or anthologies. Speakers, workshop leaders, Poet of the Year or Poet Laureate. They had been Poets
in the Schools or teachers of creative writing at the school or college level. Sadly, only 11 states sent any nominations so many others went unrewarded for their long service. Those awarded were: Indiana - Glenna Glee, Esther Towns, Cecil Tresslar, Jeanne Losey, Mabel Jean Caylor, Peggy Martin and Kay Kinnaman. Minnesota - Maxine Russell, Jim Elberling, Shirley Ensrud, Doris Stengal, Claire V.
Downes, and Allen Downes. Mississippi - Winifred Farrar, Dessie Caulfield, Brenda Finnegan, Voncile Ros. Convention Coordinator’s Report
June 18, 2008
First I want to express unlimited gratitude to Minnesota for stepping up to host the 2009 convention. They were hoping to take another turn at hosting in 2010 but have accelerated their planning and we know from prior experiences what a tremendous job they do.
With the most immediate date settled, I kept pressing on for 2010. With a great deal of credit due to Russell Strauss and his personal efforts, we have strong confirmation that Arkansas and Mississippi are joining Tennessee to host a Mid-South Convention in the Memphis area. I believe Russell will be issuing a formal invitation during the course of this convention.
My initial contact several months before met with a polite decline from the outgoing president of the poetry Society of Michigan, so it is a great delight to be eagerly invited to meet on their turf in 2011. In fact, I believe their contact person e-mailed most of the
board to make her desires known. Representatives of that society are planning attendance this year to absorb the flavor of an NFSPS Convention and learn first-hand the nuts and bolts of hosting.
With the famine-feast analogy, 2011 did post a unique problem. While I was still searching for a landing site and had tried California as one possibility, their decision to host finally arrived almost simultaneously with Michigan’s and we were forced to make a desicion
between Michigan and California. Doris and I sifted through a multitude of conversations, e-mails and misunderstandings, and we are now hopeful California will give serious consideration to hosting the 2012 convention.
Thanks for the experience. Now I’m putting away my bottle of aspirin!
